Initially, I ordered the Sony messenger bag. When the Sony bag came, my opinion was it was too flimsy and there was not enough padding on the inside. So I returned the Sony bag and ordered this one.
I have had many other computer bags before for other laptops and this one is the best out of everything I have had in the past. The outside material is a very durable semi-rigid ballastic type nylon. There is a compartment on either side of the bag and the laptop is placed in the middle. The outside compartments shield the laptop. The sides of the laptop seem to have some type of hard plastic inserts in them. The bag comes with a padded sleeve made of semi-rigid durable nylon and foam which offers further protection.
The total weight of the bag alone is 5 pounds, but the weight is a positive as it helps absorb shock to the laptop.
The only better protection you could buy for your laptop is a large Pelican hard-case that would not be transportable as a carry-on.
If you are looking for a bag for your HDX18 look no further. Other bags simply do not offer the protection. You do not want your 2000 dollar laptop placed in a flimsy bag.
This bag would be great as a carry-on and I would trust it to protect my laptop against other objects in the overhead bin.

I purchased this case in January and have been using it for almost 4 months now. Initially it came without a strap……which was apparently accidentally left out at the factory. I contacted Mobile Edge directly, and they immediately resolved the issue with excellent and personal customer service. I almost never write any kind of reviews whatsoever, but since this was such a positive experience, I wanted them to get rewarded in some way if I could return the favor. The case is large, but it is lighter than the case I had for a smaller laptop. I’m now using an 8 pound “mobile workstation” 17″ class computer that’s for doing real production work and is not really for work while jammed in a regional jet. (It’s for 3D animation, not e-mail or word processing.) The quality of the materials on this bag are very good. It feels like the dash of an exotic carbon fiber sports car. It is put together very well. It feels like the bag could protect you from gun fire with it’s textured ballistic material. The quality of this material is better than other ballistic bags I own. The top loading case is nice, as is the padded sleeve for the laptop. There is gobs of room in here for other items and every accessory you can imagine. The price was also very reasonable. It costs about a third of what my last one cost. The only criticism I have for the bag is the split handle is not terribly comfortable for extended periods of time. However, that is really a nit pickey comment considering the trade-offs in function and weight. If I ever need to replace this one, and it’s doubtful that will be anytime soon, I would definitely go with another Mobile Edge product since they really have good designs, good manufacturing, and great customer service. Oh, the styling of this bag works for professional environments very well – I don’t think the picture does it justice.
